At English Martyrs' we teach a rich and varied History Curriculum, our aim is to give children an understanding of the past.
History is an important part of the curriculum because the past influences all aspects of our lives. It shapes the customs and beliefs of the communities to which we belong. Learning about the past and the methods used to study it helps pupils make sense of the world in which they live.
During the Foundation Stage, children explore the immediate world around them, by learning about past and present events of their own lives and the lives of their own family members.
At Key Stage 1
The children make comparisons between aspects of their own lives and the lives of others further back in time, as well as learn about significant people in particular historical time periods.
At Key Stage 2
We provide a variety of opportunities where children’s skills can be developed, including historical vocabulary, enquiry and analysis techniques, the use of primary and secondary sources and ICT. Teachers provide increasingly challenging tasks and activities in history, differentiated according to the pupils’ abilities.
